1. Definition of hamster hibernation
Hamsters are animals that adapt to cold environments. In winter, in order to adapt to the low-temperature environment, they will enter a hibernation state to reduce energy consumption and maintain life activities.
Hibernation is a complex physiological state produced by the interaction of multiple systems such as nerves, endocrine, and metabolism, that is, a paralytic hypothermic state, which is different from sleep. The hibernation of hamsters is usually below 10°C and lasts for several weeks to several months.
2. The process of hamsters entering hibernation
Before entering hibernation, hamsters need to store enough energy in their bodies. Usually, nutrients are stored in adipose tissue.
When the environment gradually cools down, hamsters will start to slow down their metabolism, their body temperature will drop to about 4°C, and their breathing and heart rate will also become very slow, entering a hibernation state.
During hibernation, the hamster's body will enter a dormant state, the whole body becomes stiff, and the ears and tail will curl up into a small ball.
3. Changes during hamster hibernation
During hibernation, the body metabolism of hamsters slows down, showing very low physiological activities.
Due to the drop in body temperature, the breathing and heart rate of hamsters will also slow down and even temporarily stop. The digestive system will also slow down greatly. In order to maintain life functions, they will provide energy through stored fat and excrete metabolites.
However, hamsters are not completely asleep during hibernation. They still need to maintain a certain level of conscious activity in order to be able to adapt to any emergencies. If they feel too cold or threatened, hamsters will automatically wake up from hibernation.
4. Recovery after hamster hibernation
When the environmental temperature gradually rises, the body metabolism of hamsters gradually accelerates and the body temperature also gradually rises.
During the recovery period, hamsters will restart life behaviors such as appetite and defecation, and at the same time will gradually return to the normal active state. If the entire hibernation process goes smoothly, hamsters will return to normal after the recovery period and enjoy a lively life.
