Although people raise all kinds of animals, fewer and fewer people are willing to raise Syrian hamsters (also known as golden hamsters or teddy bear hamsters) these years because their disadvantages are really obvious.
1. They are too destructive.
Pretty much anything within their sight is likely to be destroyed by them. Don't ever think that just because they are small in size, they are extremely cute. There could be a lot of power hidden within their tiny bodies. Even a very sturdy mouse cage might be completely chewed through by them. You could wake up the next day only to find that it has already disappeared.
2. They bite.
Don't think that it's no big deal if a hamster bites. When they bite, they might even break the skin and make you bleed. Once you are bitten and bleed by a Syrian hamster, you have to get vaccinated, which really isn't worth it. So sometimes when you hold it in your hand to play with it, you'll be on tenterhooks.
3. They smell really bad.
The smell of Syrian hamsters is probably unbearable for most people. If you keep just one Syrian hamster in a room, the whole room might stink. Moreover, they eat and poop a lot, so the room is always filled with the stench of feces.
4. They cost a lot.
As we mentioned before, although this little animal looks really small, it eats a tremendous amount. So the cost of raising it is not low. If you're not in a good financial situation, it might be quite a struggle to raise one.
5. They are prone to spreading the plague.
After all, they are animals, so there could be all kinds of germs on them. If they really spread the plague, it would be extremely troublesome. So they are not really suitable for raising.
