Early pregnancy symptoms in hamsters

The symptoms in the early stage of a hamster's pregnancy mainly include changes in body shape, nipple changes, increased food and water intake, changes in sleeping postures, and changes in temperament.

Changes in Body Shape: A pregnant hamster usually has a pear-shaped body, with a small head and a big butt. Although a big belly doesn't necessarily mean pregnancy, the belly of a pregnant hamster will look tight and feel firm rather than soft and elastic.

Nipple Changes: The nipples of a pregnant hamster will gradually show up from the hair. And as time passes, the nipples will become more and more obvious, usually emerging in pairs.

Increased Food and Water Intake: Pregnant hamsters need to replenish a large amount of energy, so both their food and water intake will increase. They will also store food for later use.

Changes in Sleeping Postures: Due to the enlarged belly, the sleeping postures of hamsters will change. They usually prefer to sleep on their side or on their back.

Changes in Temperament: Pregnant hamsters may become grumpy. They often bite the cage, fight with others, and sometimes run crazily on the running wheel.

Methods to Confirm a Hamster's Pregnancy: You can touch the hamster's belly to confirm whether it's pregnant or not. The belly of a pregnant hamster will become relatively hard, while the belly of a non-pregnant hamster is soft. Besides, observing the changes in the hamster's nipples and the increase in food and water intake are also effective ways to confirm pregnancy.
