Before dying, hamsters usually show symptoms such as a decreased appetite, lethargy, dull fur, weight loss, stiff limbs, and rapid breathing. A decreased appetite is a common phenomenon. Hamsters may stop eating altogether, which might be caused by illness or old age. Lethargy is manifested as reduced activity. They often stay still in the corner and show no interest even in their favorite snacks and toys. Dull fur is due to insufficient nutrition and energy loss, with the fur becoming rough and even falling out in large amounts. Weight loss is an obvious change and usually indicates that the hamster may be sick or old. Stiff limbs are a sign of the body gradually becoming rigid. In the early stage, the torso is soft and weak, and later the whole body becomes stiff. Rapid breathing may be a symptom of wheezing or difficulty breathing, and it is usually related to a cold or pneumonia.
These symptoms of hamsters can be caused by various reasons, including diseases, old age, or other health problems. When these symptoms are noticed, the owner should closely observe the hamster's condition. If necessary, take measures such as force-feeding glucose to replenish energy and pay attention to keeping it warm. If the hamster is injured, it is necessary to first perform simple hemostasis and disinfection treatments. In serious cases, it should be taken to the vet in a timely manner.
